PETALING JAYA: Kedah’s Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has ordered the state government to review and strengthen its shariah courts to reflect the importance of Islam in the state.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional will form a special committee to study and propose ways to “strengthen the position of shariah law and preserve the interests of Muslims”.

PETALING JAYA: There is no confusion in law that only the shariah courts have jurisdiction to hear cases involving Muslims intending to renounce their faith, a lawyer said, adding that the Federal Court had put the issue to rest three years ago.

PETALING JAYA: Religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar has assured the Muslim community that the shariah courts will remain intact,  with their status clearly guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.
